Hi! 2008 was busy and stimulating - for instance, I never thought I'd ever be involved in an opera, but performing Debussy's Pelleas and Melisande (2 pianos and 6 singers) was for me both irresistible and unforgettable - what music, what an imagination!

November 2008

50th birthday celebration! - Hugh was honoured to be invited by the Royal Dublin Society to present a Chamber Music Weekend in recognition of his 50th birthday the same week. The concerts mixed solo and chamber works and enjoyed Hugh's collaboration with Catherine Leonard, John Lynch and William Butt. The programmes, with a fair slice of Beethoven plus some great duos and quartets, were devised to represent some of his favorite areas of the repertoire.


October 2008

Pelleas revived! - Opera Theatre Company staged in Dublin and Belfast only the second ever Irish production of Debussy's masterpiece Pelleas et Melisande in a version for 2 pianos (Mairead Hurley and Hugh); the previous production was 60 years earlier in 1948.


September 2008

Emperor launches season - Hugh's performance of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto under conductor Gerhard Markson was part of the RTE National Symphony Orchestra's season opener at Dublin's National Concert Hall.


June 2008

Got to the Getty! - Hugh partnered Irish soprano Ailish Tynan in Los Angeles' Getty Museum in the new Music for Museums series.


April 2008

Ades Premiere - Thomas Ades' Piano Quintet was given its Irish premiere by Hugh and others in the Royal Irish Academy of Music's Trios at Three series at Dublin's National Gallery of Art.


February 2008

In the Waterfront! - The 2 Liszt Concerti were presented in the same concert by Hugh and Finghin Collins with the Ulster Orchestra under Kenneth Montgomery in Belfast's Waterfront Hall and Dublin's National Concert Hall.


September 2007

Honorary Degree ... - Hugh was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Music by the National University of Ireland.

Contemporary project continues... - Hugh's Arts Council of Ireland funded contemporary project continued with 2 recitals in Dublin .....more

Other concerts - Hugh joined the RTE National Symphony Orchestra under Gerhard Markson to perform Mendelssohn's G minor concerto at Dublin's National Concert Hall in September; afterwards, he performed solo and duo recitals around Ireland.


July 2007

Wilson première in Bantry and CD in Belgrade - Following the successful première of a new septet "re:play" by Ian Wilson at the West Cork Chamber Festival, Hugh took a quick trip to Belgrade to record the composer's "Limena" with the Belgrade Strings for CD.


June 2007

CD of Beethoven masterworks released - RTE Lyric FM release the new Beethoven CD by Hugh and violinist Catherine Leonard, including the Kreutzer and Spring sonatas; the CD is already receiving high acclaim from press and public. Spring 2007

Schnittke and Mozart - Hugh's schedule included Schnittke's affecting piano quintet at the National Gallery in Dublin in March, recitals around Ireland in duos with Catherine Leonard and Carol McGonnell, and Mozart's "Elvira Madigan" C major concerto with the RTE Concert Orchestra at the Royal Dublin Society in April.


January 2007

A brief encounter with Rachmaninov - Hugh's performance of the second Rachmaninov concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin brought a standing ovation.


November 2006

Romanian Rhapsody with Viennese masters - Hugh partnered the famous Ensemble Wien at Dublin Castle in chamber music by Enescu and Mozart.


Autumn 2006

Angels and Demons around Ireland! - Hugh took his "Heaven and Hell" recital on tour around the country.


September 2006

Hugh plays at inaugural New Ross Piano Festival - Hugh joined Finghin Collins, Miceal O'Rourke, ConTempo quartet and others at this newly-launched 3-day event which attracted a strong local following.


July 2006

Hugh leaves post at Music in Great Irish Houses festival - after six years at the helm, Hugh will be succeeded in the role of Artistic Director by Ciara Higgins, the Festival's Press Officer in recent years. Read about the festival here...


May 2006

Hugh receives 2-year bursary from Arts Council of Ireland - the bursary will help him research and perform a range of international and Irish contemporary repertoire.


February 2006

Hugh and Vanbrugh Quartet play Morton Feldman - Hugh and the Vanbrugh Quartet teamed up in Feldman's 90-minute work Piano and String Quartet at the RTE Living Music Festival.


August 2005

Hugh in Paris - Hugh performed en plein air at the Classique au Vert concerts in the Bois de Vincennes.


March 2005

Hugh joins Tokyo Quartet in Dvorak - during Cork's year as European City of Culture, Hugh and the celebrated Tokyo Quartet gave a performance of the Dvorak quintet.
